Hand Carved Vintage Miniature Decoy
A Note of Interest: We have bought and sold early 20th century decoys for over 30 years and this is the first fine miniature decoy specimen that we have ever owned and it has been in our personal collection for over 20 years.
This one-of-a-kind hand carved Canadian duck decoy miniature was created circa 1900-1920. Little is known about this superbly carved miniature duck, obviously it was not ever produced or used as a working decoy or as a toy, but rather as a decoy sample. It was a presentation display piece of the maker's ability to carve and create his version of a particular decoy style or variety of duck or waterfowl.
The finely 'alligatored' painted surface gives a clue to its age. So be assured that this vintage miniature decoy is old and not any form of reproduction. It could even date back to the late 19th century, when the idea of using a salesman's sample was more prevalent, especially when one could fit this type of sample in their pocket.
This carved miniature decoy comes from
the estate of a keen eyed Ontario duck hunter who came from the Bruce Penninsula region of Ontario. The mini decoy has no name or signature anywhere on it, so the carver ramains anonymous.
There is also a very good possibility that this decoy was used as a 'calling card' or a free sample by the maker to 'drum up' business for his life sized working decoys. This form of advertizing and promotion was a common practice as far back as the 18th century for carvers who were eager to seek new clients and customers for their waterfowl decoys.
